Our day started early with a morning game drive. We spotted Northern Black Korhaans (nicknamed “helicopter birds”), ostriches, springboks, bat-eared foxes, and ground squirrels before reaching our ultimate destination – a meerkat colony.

Promotional photos in travel magazines show meerkats sitting in people’s laps or climbing on their heads. We followed these meerkats for some distance after they emerged from their holes, but they were having none of that “cutesy stuff” (they were probably tired of “performing”). They were still fun to watch, though.

After about an hour we left the meerkats and headed to a place in the bush where a much-welcomed mid-morning breakfast was ready for us. We could see wildebeests out in the distance.

After breakfast we resumed our game drive, where we saw wildebeests, White-backed Vultures, ostriches, springboks, and waterbucks.
“Wonder if there are any leftovers from breakfast?”
